What does autoimmune skin condition mean?
Autoimmune skin conditions refer to a group of disorders in which the immune system, which normally defends the body against harmful substances, mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissues in the skin. In these conditions, the immune system becomes overactive or dysregulated, leading to inflammation and damage to the skin.
In a healthy immune system, immune cells identify and destroy foreign substances, such as bacteria or viruses, to protect the body from infection. However, in autoimmune conditions, the immune system fails to recognise the body’s own cells and tissues as “self,” and instead, it targets them as if they were foreign invaders. This immune response results in chronic inflammation and damage to the skin.
What happens to the skin?
Autoimmune skin conditions can manifest in various ways, including redness, itching, rash, blistering, scaling, or the formation of raised bumps or lesions on the skin. Other common autoimmune skin conditions include psoriasis, lupus, dermatomyositis, pemphigus, pemphigoid, vitiligo, and lichen planus, as above.
What causes the problem?
The exact causes of autoimmune skin conditions are not fully understood, but they are believed to involve a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and dysregulation of the immune system. These conditions often have a complex interplay between genetic factors and environmental influences, such as infections, certain medications, hormonal changes, stress, or exposure to certain chemicals or allergens.
How are they treated?
Managing autoimmune skin conditions typically involves a multidisciplinary approach that may include dermatologists, immunologists, rheumatologists, and other healthcare professionals. Treatment strategies aim to reduce inflammation, manage symptoms, and modulate the immune response. They can involve topical or systemic medications, phototherapy, lifestyle modifications, stress management techniques, and other supportive measures tailored to each individual’s needs.
