Conditions / Skin Conditions

Your skin is the largest organ in the body and often reflects what is happening beneath the surface.

While skincare and treatments can play an important role, many chronic or recurring skin conditions are also influenced by inflammation, hormones, gut health, immune function, stress, nutrition and environmental triggers.

At The Bespoke Clinic, we take an integrative and investigative approach to skin health. Alongside evidence-based skin treatments, we also explore the potential underlying drivers that may be contributing to chronic or recurring skin concerns, including inflammation, hormones, gut health, immune function, stress, nutrition and environmental triggers.

For some patients, this may involve improving hydration, skin texture and collagen support. For others, particularly those struggling with inflammatory or autoimmune-related skin conditions, it may mean exploring deeper contributors that could be driving ongoing flares, irritation or sensitivity.

Many of our patients come to us feeling frustrated after years of creams, antibiotics, restrictive diets or short-term fixes that never fully addressed the bigger picture.

Looking Beyond the Skin

Skin conditions are rarely caused by one single factor. For example:

Hormonal acne may be influenced by androgen activity, stress, blood sugar imbalance or inflammation. Rosacea is increasingly recognised as an inflammatory condition which may overlap with gut health issues, microbiome imbalance, histamine sensitivity, vascular dysfunction and immune system activation.

Eczema and psoriasis are inflammatory immune-mediated conditions which may be affected by stress, allergies, environmental triggers, nutrition, gut permeability and immune regulation. Some autoimmune-related skin conditions may coexist alongside other inflammatory or autoimmune symptoms elsewhere in the body.

This does not mean that every patient requires extensive testing or complicated protocols. However, understanding potential contributing factors can sometimes help us create a more personalised and sustainable treatment approach.

Our Integrative Approach to Skin Health

We combine evidence-based skin treatments with a broader understanding of overall health and wellbeing.

Depending on your concerns and goals, your plan may include a combination of the following

Functional Medicine & Internal Health Support

Where appropriate, we may also explore deeper underlying contributors to chronic skin inflammation and immune dysregulation, including:

In selected patients, advanced testing may also be considered, including hormone testing, gut microbiome analysis and nutrigenomic DNA testing. This can sometimes provide further insight into inflammatory pathways, detoxification, oxidative stress, skin ageing tendencies, collagen support, nutrient requirements and individual responses to environmental triggers.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need functional medicine testing for my skin?

No. Many patients improve with the right skincare, lifestyle support and targeted treatments alone. Advanced testing is only recommended where clinically appropriate and based on your symptoms, history and goals.

Emerging research continues to explore the connection between the gut microbiome, inflammation and skin health, often referred to as the “gut-skin axis”. In some patients, digestive symptoms, microbiome imbalance or food sensitivities may contribute to inflammatory skin patterns.

We support patients with inflammatory and autoimmune-related skin conditions using an integrative approach. We do not claim to cure autoimmune disease, but we may explore factors that could be contributing to inflammation, skin barrier dysfunction and immune stress.

Yes. Hormones can significantly influence oil production, inflammation, collagen levels, pigmentation and skin ageing. Hormonal shifts are particularly common during puberty, post-pill transitions, pregnancy and perimenopause.

Yes. Our clinic combines medical aesthetics with a broader functional and regenerative approach to skin health. Some patients only require skin treatments, while others benefit from a deeper exploration of internal health factors.

The Bespoke Clinic is based in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, supporting patients across Newcastle, the North East and further afield.
